Customer Review: “I’ve owned about 5 of these things and I always leave them in the truck I’m selling. So, I’ve had my current truck awhile but I’m installing these PRO520XL in it this coming weekend. Only complaint is, for its compact size, which allows all kinds of places to install it in, I know there’s room inside the unit itself to add Weather Channels (NOAA). I’m sticking with this radio because of the price #1…#2 it’s always performed as advertised with no problems at all. Transmitting distance, with a CB Radio, ANY CB Radio depends on a multitude of things like mountains, windy roads, elevation (“skip” is fun when you’re on the top of an especially big/tall mountain, especially when it’s the flat desert for hundreds+ of miles on the other side…Talked to MANY MANY folks from all over the SE, East, NE and I especially like “conversing” the Louisiana/Georgia area States. Man, those guys have accents that just won’t quit and especially unique stories to tell…Like a different world over there and I want to visit it before I’m dead and gone and you just gotta love it! Thanks Uniden for keeping me posted while driving, and at home too! And, almost around the world. I started CB’n back in my late teens (16 once I got a license to drive…) and because I’ve used my CB in many occasions on an emergency, for usually less than $100, you can fire a CB up in your vehicle, talk to the truckers on your trip and just have peace of mind. You might think you’re OK with just your cell phone…Uhmmmmm, ever been driving in areas where there is no cell signal, basically a NO CELL ZONE??? I rescued a family of 5 in a NO CELL ZONE in the mountains at 11pm. Car just stopped and it was about 40 degrees outside. Parents had 3 kids ranging from 7-12. Couldn’t use my Verizon Cell so I fired up my Uniden PRO520XL and after a few minutes, I finally picked up a guy who lived in Georgia. The State of GEORGIA! I was just outside of Bend, OR, just a couple THOUSAND miles away from the guy who answered my “May Day” Call…GEORGIA!!! Had a good clear signal so he took my info of where we were, approx. how many miles we were up on a specific mountain road and gave him my cell number too. What he did was call the local Bend, OR sheriffs’ office, about 30 miles away from where “The Family” and we were. The police then relayed the message to a AAA towing company located in Bend, and within a little over an hour, up the road a AAA Towing Truck finally came! Family Saved!…We were there for about 2+ hours total, but it was great to be able to help this family. Literally, the “Dad” told me he was going to go buy a CB for his SUV and one for his motor home too as soon as he gets back home to Portland. Not only are CB’s great in emergency’s like this (Cheap insurance against a possible tragedy…) they’re fun too. I also use mine when caravanning with a few of my friends who have CB’s while driving together on our way to a camping or fishing destination. Easily coordinate Pee breaks! Customer Review: “This is a great little (and inexpensive) radio. I have a much older pro 500 model that still works. That radio has been in an old jeep, mounted on a 4 wheeler, laying on the floor of a truck (temp install), and sitting on a shelf in an outside storage room (humid climate) for years. It’s at least 20 years old… and it’s still working. I made the mistake of letting someone open it up to “peak” it probably 15 years ago. It still works, but I think it did more harm than good. I recently hooked it up again. Receive was GREAT, but transmit wasn’t so great (I’m blaming the “peak” job for that). It did transmit, but it wasn’t very clear. I bet if it had never been hacked, it would be working perfectly. That’s the main reason I decided to buy a similar model. I was originally shopping for a bigger, fancier radio, but decided the price of this was a no-brainer. And it’s really all I need. I spend about an hour a day on the road and mainly listen in for traffic reports and “bear” sightings. I connected it to a Wilson “Little Wil” and had a good SWR reading right away. Just like the old radio, the receive is great (and the speaker is nice and loud). I tested the stock mic, an old RK56, and a new Astatic Road Devil. The stock mic actually sounded the best. The RK56 was much quieter and sounded muffled (although it always worked great on a Cobra 29). The Road Devil was a bit louder, but lacked the clarity of the Uniden mic (but only slightly/not enough to matter). I personally don’t like the small size of the stock mic, so I’m using the Road Devil for now. I hooked up the old radio (pro 500) to an AC adapter inside my garage and connected an old magnetic antenna to it. I let my kids talk to me on that radio as I drove a couple miles away. Even with that much less than ideal setup, the old radio was receiving my new 520xl loud and clear at 2 miles. Hopefully, this one will last as long as the old one.”

I live in Washington state, not near any big cities, and heard a woman from San Diego! Easy to set up, super easy to operate! Best thing I’ve bought in a while. Customer Review: “Short review: This CB performs just as good as my 29LTD does on the bench. The reviews saying it’s quiet, make sure the RX audio “DSP” level is set to off vs the factory default of 1. Also make sure it’s set to “DX” and not local, it’s deaf on “local”. I found that setting it to DX, squelch off, and RX DSP to level 1 works well and it only makes noise when it hears something. I wish the included USB power adapter had the same funky twist lock port like on the “black box”. Also, if you do end up using this in something like a side-by-side, make sure that USB port is sealed. If that plug cover comes off, nothing is stopping water from entering it. Now on to a more technical review. After receiving and unpacking this radio, it was put to some tests on the bench with an IFR service monitor. First tests were receiver sensitivity. Receiver DSP doesn’t do much for RF performance other than help clean up noise. You’ll rarely need to go above level 2 because it starts sounding horrible set any higher. AM results DX setting: .1uV or less on AM with 50% modulation. (Pretty much as low as the service monitor will go.) Local setting: 1uV or more on AM with 50% modulation. (Very local receiving ranges) FM results DX: .1uV (as good or better than some of the commercial radios I’ve had to service) Local: 5uV (very, very, local) TX results AM Average power: 3.69 watts (FCC compliant) Peak (TX DSP on, 1): 12.19 watts Peak (TX DSP off): 15.4 watts Modulation (TX DSP on, 1): 80% Modulation (TX DSP off): 90% FM Power: 3.5 watts Deviation: +.7Hz (this was impressive) I haven’t done any testing after being installed in a vehicle, but from bench testing, I don’t doubt it’ll work just fine as a CB when paired with a decent antenna. If you were wondering about making any tweaks, not reasonably possible at this time. However, the USB port appears to be an actual USB port so eventually someone will figure out how to make changes via firmware.”

Customer Review: “Hey, it’s cheap (price wise), it works and it’s dependable in the woods. It keeps me from getting run over up in the forest roads that I roam in several days a week, wind, rain or shine. I can monitor the trucks hauling out wood and they can monitor me when I’m bumping around. I’ll switch to the particular haul road’s cb channel that’s painted on a tree at the entrance to the road and will let whoever’s listening know what forest road I’m on, what direction I’m heading, what I’m driving and what marker I’m at. Those who are running that road will usually get back to me and I’ll call out the markers as I head their direction. I can hear them calling their markers out as they head towards me if we’re on the same road. Either way, it’s safe, sane and the C.B. does the trick. I had no problem mounting it but matching it is a bit fussy for me. The SWR readings are good, but the antenna ground needs some work. Not the c.b. Would I buy it again? Yeah. But there’s one more that’s a bit pricier that has the scan option for $20-$30 more. I’d have bought if I didn’t buy this one. This one’s cheap in price but so far it’s doing the job. The speaker’s a bit challenging for me (hearing impaired, go figure) but I can still figure out what’s being said. It’s just a bit of a challenge sometimes. Bottom line? If you need a cheap, easy to install, usable C.B. this is the one. When they say “compact”, they mean it. I run it in my 2015 Ford F150 4X4 (short box) but keep in mind you will have to ground the antenna mount. Too many folks forget that part. I run it with a 4 ft. FireStick most of the time. I had my last FireStick “borrowed” when I parked my truck in a store’s parking lot. When I came back outside my FireStick antenna was gone. So, right now I’m running around with a little magnetic mount on the roof. It works but it’s no FireStick. I gave it 5 stars because it’s better than my old one that I paid double this price for when I bought it. That one was borrowed and never returned.”

Customer Review: “Some off-roading friends of mine recommended, as a first time CB user, for me to buy this Uniden along with a good antenna. They were right, it is a spectacular radio and it appears the price on Amazon was the best around. They use 510 XLs for off-roading with ± a mile or so between them on the trails. Fresh out of the box, the quality of this Uniden is clear – clean, solid metal construction with robust knobs and cable connections. Bright LEDs on-screen, good squelch control, and clear led level indications as well. On the back, there is a connector for the antenna, red/black for power (with in-line fuseholder and fuse) and then an extra port for a Uniden external speaker. I would recommend the speaker for folks who mount the CB down low. I have mine mounted overhead so the 510 XL’s built-in speaker fires down at us passengers… it is plenty loud enough for me in my diesel pickup and I don’t even have to turn it up half way. But if you have yours mounted down low, the carpet may absorb the sound which makes the external speaker worthwhile – and they are not expensive at all. I plugged in the Uniden Pro 510XL unit in with a Wilson 1000 Mag mount base loaded antenna. The antenna is on my crew cab pickup roof, which makes for an excellent ground plane. Out of the box, I was up and running the first day I hooked it up. I could hear some conversations quite clearly, seemingly better than a clear telephone conversation. Of course, there is always chatter and conversations in-between folks talking if you are monitoring busy channels. Like any CB unit, the antenna (or antennas) makes all the difference. Most cars and pickups with an available flat mounting surface (trunk lid or roof) would do well with a Wilson brand antenna, other cars requiring side mount might accept a full whip well. Either way, get a good quality antenna and have a friend with an SWR meter help you tune it to maximize performance and avoid burning up your radio. I did not burn up my radio the first time without tuning, but with tuning I was able to bring the antenna right into the perfect safe SWR range. This is a highly recommended unit if you are just getting into CB, especially if you do not need all of the features of more expensive or complex units. The Pro 510 XL just gets the job done and does it well. Its a Rock Solid CB radio.”
