I live in Washington state, not near any big cities, and heard a woman from San Diego! Easy to set up, super easy to operate! Best thing I’ve bought in a while. Living in rural Washington, sometimes there’s little or no cell service. Great back up for emergency communications! Besides, there is something about talking & hearing people both near and far! Gonna make road trips a lot more fun!

Customer Review: Smaller than expected, which was awesome. The radio worked well with the antenna provided. If you want better quality, and longer range you need to pay for it. This is excellent for the price. You won’t be able to talk to the moon, but perfect for traveling.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: The media could not be loaded. This kit provides you with a basic entry level radio, the President Ted, with a basic fixed antenna, which is the Virginia F. While this certainly isn’t a commercial grade radio and antenna, it definitely is a decent little radio and functional antenna combination for $79 at the time I’m typing this. This isn’t a feature laden radio, but in my opinion it’s pretty unbeatable at this price point. If you need a very basic, yet dependable radio, this is one to take a close look at. It’s basically got auto-squelch (ACS) in addition to manual squelch, it has AM/FM, quick access to channel 9, and channel scan. You can receive, transmit, and add an external speaker and that’s pretty much it.It seems to receive fine and transmit pretty well with the basic included antenna (pairing this with a better antenna would certainly be even better). The radio casing is good quality and honestly the built-in internal speaker doesn’t sound too bad. The display is easy to read and the controls are easy to use.The antenna is fixed, has a rubber protected magnet base for mounting, and is small enough to be mounted on pretty much any type of vehicle. It’s very easy to handle and actually performs pretty well for a basic antenna. The fact that you’re getting the antenna included with the radio at the $79 price is simply phenomenal. The radio includes a mounting bracket, basic mic, and a mounting kit for the mic itself. The wiring harness has a bare negative wire and a bare positive wire. You’ll need to get your own 12V accessory plug or take the necessary steps to hardwire it yourself (hardwiring and ensuring a good ground would give optimal performance). This isn’t for everyone….This might not be for the professional trucker, construction site mobile equipment operator, or for other commercial use, but it should be adequate for your passenger vehicle, farm equipment, or for trail riding in utility vehicles. It’s designed to be entry level and if you need something higher end, then take a look at the President Thomas, JFK III, or other models. It’s a great basic kit if your expectations are realistic and it works great for me.

Customer Review: Fantastic little Radio! This president at FCC 40 channel radio is a great radio especially great for a first Radio. It’s an expensive, it’s very easy to install, comes with an installation kit, a good antenna, and instructions. Comes with a really cool sticker also! This is a very small Radio, smaller than most so it will fit just about anywhere. It has very good reception and Transmission. All FCC radios put out a maximum of 4 W. Does it matter the brand doesn’t matter the model or watts is all you get, legally. This is a great radio if you’ve never owned one before. You don’t have to spend a whole ton of money and you’re getting a very high-quality Radio. The president brand put out a fantastic product. I can’t recommend president brand any higher. This comes with a good antenna, you could always upgrade your antenna to a 102 whip in the future and get better reception and Transmission. This Radio has a very good microphone. It has an automatic squelch control on it and it’s very easy to use. If you’re looking for a small Radio, or especially if you’re a person buying your first radio, this is a great starter radio. You always know when you’re buying the president brand that you’re getting a good quality product. I can highly recommend this radio to anybody.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: Bought this for tractor. Perfect CB for small vehicles. No complaints. Been using for years and works great.

Customer Review: Love the remote. Placed it in my glove box. Mileage will depend on mounting point, seriously ground as much as possible. Ensure you bond your body to frame, tailgate/trunk/and or hood! Your volume will matter depending where you mount the head unit. Not super loud. Includes external Mike Jack for the top off and deaf. Easy peasy. Multiple backlight and easy to remember button layout. Tx/Rx is good. Getting 6-10 miles rolling the burbs. Woods a little less. Good little rig. Not as many whistles as a c29, but I need the space more than the “look at my big bling box” radio. Backs up my portable Midland for spotting. Satisfied. Will probably back this up with GMRS on the other mount…for days when I feel like getting out.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: I’ve owned about 5 of these things and I always leave them in the truck I’m selling. So, I’ve had my current truck awhile but I’m installing these PRO520XL in it this coming weekend. Only complaint is, for its compact size, which allows all kinds of places to install it in, I know there’s room inside the unit itself to add Weather Channels (NOAA). I’m sticking with this radio because of the price #1…#2 it’s always performed as advertised with no problems at all. Transmitting distance, with a CB Radio, ANY CB Radio depends on a multitude of things like mountains, windy roads, elevation (“skip” is fun when you’re on the top of an especially big/tall mountain, especially when it’s the flat desert for hundred’s+ of miles on the other side… Talked to MANY MANY folks from all over the SE, East, NE and I especially like “conversing” the Louisiana/Georgia area States. Man, those guys have accents that just won’t quit and especially unique stories to tell… Like a different world over there and I want to visit it before I’m dead and gone and you just gotta love it! Thanks Uniden for keeping me posted while driving, and at home too! And, almost around the world. I started CB’n back in my late teens (16 once I got a license to drive…) and because I’ve used my CB in many occasions on an emergency, for usually less than $100, you can fire a CB up in your vehicle, talk to the truckers on your trip and just have peace of mind. You might think you’re OK with just your cell phone…Uhmmmmm, ever been driving in areas where there is no cell signal, basically a NO CELL ZONE??? I rescued a family of 5 in a NO CELL ZONE in the mountains at 11pm. Car just stopped and it was about 40 degrees outside. Parents had 3 kids ranging from 7-12. Couldn’t use my Verizon Cell so I fired up my Uniden PRO520XL and after a few minutes, I finally picked up a guy who lived in Georgia. The State of GEORGIA! I was just outside of Bend, OR, just a couple THOUSAND miles away from the guy who answered my “May Day” Call…GEORGIA!!! Had a good clear signal so he took my info of where we were, approx. how many miles we were up on a specific mountain road and gave him my cell number too. What he did was call the local Bend, OR sheriffs’ office, about 30 miles away from where “The Family” and we were. The police then relayed the message to a AAA towing company located in Bend, and within a little over an hour, up the road a AAA Towing Truck finally came! Family Saved!…We were there for about 2+ hours total, but it was great to be able to help this family. Literally, the “Dad” told me he was going to go buy a CB for his SUV and one for his motor home too as soon as he gets back home to Portland. Not only are CB’s great in emergency’s like this (Cheap insurance against a possible tragedy…) they’re fun too. I also use mine when caravanning with a few of my friends who have CB’s while driving together on our way to a camping or fishing destination. Easily coordinate Pee breaks! And, they’re just plain fun, convenient too and you get quality at an affordable cost. PLUS, they’re very very easy to install! Ken J. Nehalem, OR.

Customer Review: This is a great little (and inexpensive) radio. I have a much older pro 500 model that still works. That radio has been in an old jeep, mounted on a 4 wheeler, laying on the floor of a truck (temp install), and sitting on a shelf in an outside storage room (humid climate) for years. It’s at least 20 years old… and it’s still working. I made the mistake of letting someone open it up to “peak” it probably 15 years ago. It still works, but I think it did more harm than good. I recently hooked it up again. Receive was GREAT, but transmit wasn’t so great (I’m blaming the “peak” job for that). It did transmit, but it wasn’t very clear. I bet if it had never been hacked, it would be working perfectly. That’s the main reason I decided to buy a similar model. I was originally shopping for a bigger, fancier radio, but decided the price of this was a no-brainer. And it’s really all I need. I spend about an hour a day on the road and mainly listen in for traffic reports and “bear” sightings. I connected it to a Wilson “Little Wil” and had a good SWR reading right away. Just like the old radio, the receive is great (and the speaker is nice and loud). I tested the stock mic, an old RK56, and a new Astatic Road Devil. The stock mic actually sounded the best. The RK56 was much quieter and sounded muffled (although it always worked great on a Cobra 29). The Road Devil was a bit louder, but lacked the clarity of the Uniden mic (but only slightly/not enough to matter). I personally don’t like the small size of the stock mic, so I’m using the Road Devil for now. I hooked up the old radio (pro 500) to an AC adapter inside my garage and connected an old magnetic antenna to it. I let my kids talk to me on that radio as I drove a couple miles away. Even with that much less than ideal setup, the old radio was receiving my new 520xl loud and clear at 2 miles. Hopefully, this one will last as long as the old one.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: Was a little worried about performance due to size. I did not have room for a full size cb so I bought this. My worries were unfounded! I used the best coaxial cable and antenna I could find. I checked the power output and it is a full 4 watts! I use this for long roadtrips and off roading. This cb has not let me down very happy with it.

Customer Review: The President Bill III rocks with the President New Virginia. Just did Houston to Sturgis and Sturgis to Houston trip. I was picking up oversize loaders and driver 3-4 miles out clear and easy in open country. In the city 1-3 miles was easy. The oversize loaders drivers and followers like that I would let them know I was about to pass them with my trailer. The truckers were nice too even though I was a 4 wheel, I would let them know I was slowing for them to pass me or I was going to pass them. It never got hot like I read other reviews maybe that was a problem with the Bill II. This unit is very small which I like for my Chevy Colorado. It blows the Cobra 19 mini out of the water in everything. It feels like a premium build unit, solid. The Cobra did too but it lacks all around in power. The Bill III is easy to use and love the weather channel. One quick push of a button and you’re getting weather updates. That helped a lot while camping. It comes with two mounts and I am using the one where you can remove it quickly. CB is not dead and very helpful when traveling. I will be buying a larger President once I get a full size truck. The price of it is well worth it and you’re getting a lot of function out of tiny unit.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: I purchased this for a few reasons. I’m into radio, HAM, GMRS, SW, SDR and more. On a radio forum I am on, lot of people were talking about CB making a comeback. In fact it’s been a longtime ongoing conversation and how it is making a comeback. I was on CB from about 1972 to the mid 1980’s. I purchased this and a Uniden Pro401. I also purchased a Francis Hot Rod CB26 antenna, a better mount and set everything up properly on my truck. I used this and the Uniden on a 4000 mile round trip from Tennessee to Arizona. At home I have kept it plugged in and on and with one radio scanning and one radio on these were the results during the 4000+ mile round trip.I heard exactly one trucker and two women talk on the CB. The trucker long enough to get directions from a truck stop and two women who only made contact so one could let the other know to call her on her cell. And of course the illegal high power broadcasters out of Nevada that override everything on some channels (23).People on GMRS were broadcasting constantly to the point I had to turn off my GMRS radio. Unfortunately it appears Citizen Band is not making a comeback, from my experience, this radio is called a Road Trip and that is what I used it for, a 4000 mile road trip. If my experience is any indication whatsoever, no, CB is not making a comeback. The Airwaves are dead.As far as the radio itself, it is a good radio, solidly built, with batteries in has a nice weight to it, plenty of options and the weather channels work well although I can do the same real time weather on my Digital trunking Scanner or Cell phone. The radio itself gets five stars, the CB airwaves get zero because almost nobody is on it.Edit: We just had a major winter storm and received more snow and ice than we have in over three decades. The one day snowfall hasn’t seen this accumulation since 1993. We are in the hills and mountains with a lot of trucks coming this direction to get to Knoxville, Chattanooga and further on up to Nashville. Listening to my scanners everything is extremely active with one emergency call after another around the clock. Thought I might turn on this CB to see if Channel 9 is active. Channel 9 (The emergency channel) is extremely active. We have had multiple jackknifed trucks, one rollover and one went off the mountain into the trees. Truckers are using Channel 9 like I have never heard it. We are in the mountains, everything is snow and ice and this is what they call, for us, a once every 25 year storm. so no one expected the conditions to be this bad and off the main highways nothing gets cleared, it has to melt, because we don’t budget for storms that only happen once every 20-30 years. so yes the CB is being used heavily to get help on Channel 9.For normal day to day use, the airwaves are dead. But now, under extreme weather conditions, the truckers are definitely using it and so are some of the people stuck in their homes up on the mountain and plateau.

Customer Review: As advertised. In summary -Because I have thoroughly tested this radio,I now know that it provides my family & me an EASY TO USE(including a well written, organized & illustrated Manual),portable, proven/stable technology, easy to keep energized means of local (i.e., “line of sight” to the horizon) emergency communication.Based on the above (and with lots of hands on experience with other popular means of family communication, such as GMRS & FRS) this is, for us, an optimal investment.Update – Jan. 28, 2025:Wanted to offer the following FAVORABLE ‘field testing’ FINDINGS to those,i.e., NOT ‘everybody’ : ),who would want THIS GRANULAR LEVEL OF DETAIL.This is based on running the Cobra HHRT50 (aka HH50WXST) CB thru the following test cycles:6 Charge mode and then 6 thru Listen, aka Receive, mode, using NiMH batteries +1 test cycle thru Listen, aka, Receive, Mode using Alkaline batteries.None of the following field testing has to do with Transmit mode, or Scan mode.CHARGE mode: Used a well known / proven brand of NiMH 2500 milli-Ampere hours (aka, “mAh”) AA batteries. Number of hours to Charge averaged 11. This 11 hours statistic does NOT include the 1st full Charge which took the characteristically longer NiMH 1st Charge cycle, which in this 1st Charge case took 28 hours.LISTEN, aka, RECEIVE mode:(a.) NiMH: Used the above NiMH 2500 milli-Ampere hours (aka, “mAh”) fully charged AA batteries. Number of hours of usage averaged 28 for the batteries to deplete.(b.) Alkaline: Used a fully charged well known / proven brand of NON-rechargeable 2500 milli-Ampere hours (aka, “mAh”) AAs. Number of hours of usage was 22 for the batteries to deplete. I only cycled thru THIS specific test using Alkaline one time, thus, this number, 22, is not an average.Associated technical FAVORABLE experience to be reported:I found the Cobra User Manual *, cover to cover, to be well organized, illustrated & written.Meanwhile, the User Manual does not include the Ampere consumption rates in the various modes.I recognize that only a small percentage of CB users would actually ever want this level of detailed information. In my case, I did, hence, I posted related questions on this to “Amazon Q & A.” & learned as follows.Want interested readers to know that with in less than 2 days I received the needed & helpful information directly from the Cobra Manufacturing Support Department(along with their professionally required responsible statement:“These values are estimates and may vary based on specific conditions and settings”).For all of the above, I am MOST appreciative; here were their replies that some Review readers might want to know:Charging mode Amperes consumption rate: 500 – 1000 milli-Amperes, depending on usual variables.Listen, aka Receive, mode Amperes consumption rate: 100 – 150 milli-Amperes, depending on usual variables.Transmit mode Amperes consumption rate: On “high power” 700 – 900 milli-Amperes, depending on usual variables.______* Cobra Part No. 480-1088-P-001, Version D (Publish Date: 2017).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between AM and FM modes on CB radios?

A: AM (Amplitude Modulation) is the traditional mode used on CB radios, offering longer range but more prone to static. FM (Frequency Modulation) provides clearer sound and less noise but typically has a shorter range. Many modern radios support both modes for flexibility.

Q: Do I need a special license to operate a CB radio?

A: In the United States, CB radios operate on a license-free basis for personal and business use, as long as the radio meets FCC regulations. However, it’s important to follow local laws and regulations regarding CB radio use.

Q: Can I install a CB radio on any vehicle?

A: Yes, CB radios can be installed in most vehicles including cars, trucks, SUVs, and off-road vehicles. Proper mounting and antenna placement are important for optimal performance.

Q: How far can a CB radio communicate?

A: The typical range of a CB radio varies from 1 to 20 miles depending on terrain, antenna quality, weather, and radio power. In open areas, you might reach longer distances, while urban or mountainous areas may reduce range.

Q: What accessories should I consider for my CB radio?

A: Essential accessories include a quality antenna, mounting brackets, external speakers, and microphones. An antenna tuner and coaxial cables can also improve signal quality and range.
