Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “Everyone has a little bit different setup for their CB’s. I decided that I wanted to put money into a great radio with a lot of features. This one fit the bill, and of all the CB’s I’ve run (President McKinley, Cobra 29LX Max, Retivis AM/FM CB) it’s the nicest. The contrast is not as aggressive as some displays, with Daytime mode being just bright enough to hack it. The colors were all vibrant, but it was missing a true amber color. No big deal.I paired this radio with a 3’ Firestik antenna and a 5” Pyle PA speaker. I wanted to test the full gamut of features. Overall, the radio functions extremely well.First off, setting the SWR in radio is both easy and effective. The accuracy seems to be pretty good. After hooking up the antenna, I tested out some of the features. SSB works great on both upper and lower, and you can easily dial out the chipmunk voice. The audio quality is the best on any radio I’ve used, on SSB or AM.The PA feature is basic, but functional. I really have no need for a PA, other than to say “Re-elect Mayor Goldie Wilson”. It works, much to the consternation of my neighbors. This radio, with the aforementioned antenna, has excellent TX and RX. SSB’s extra wattage helps with that.In the end, there were a few features that I would have preferred to see: CTCSS, Roger beep, anbd amber lighting. But, none of them were dealbreakers and the radio otherwise performs perfectly.”

Customer Review: “I absolutely love this radio. All the features and accessibility make this the best I’ve owned so far. I was skeptical at first due to some of the negative reviews on Amazon, but after playing with it all day today, I’m glad I bought it. It can be peaked and tuned though it’s set perfect out of the box. Doesn’t drift at all and the internal diagnostics is a plus though I’m not sure how accurate it is. I purchased this as a replacement from a burned up unit, so I thought. Old one wouldn’t transmit and it was very old. Plugged in my new, cheaper antenna to this one and the diagnostic test failed the antenna. Actually metered it finally and sure enough my antenna is bad. So I threw away my old unit for nothing I’m sure. Albeit aside, I’m more than happy with the clarity out of this one and is a huge upgrade from what I had. Weather bands sound great. Memory scan and full channel scan as well as side band are great features. Can fine tune everything quite easily. I watched a single YouTube video about this radio and that’s all I needed. No need to break out the manual for this unit. Once you get the idea, it’s very simple to navigate through all the features. I put this one in my 2014 Silverado z71 right in the center console. Easy power access and ability to hide all the wires. Looks like it belongs. Highly recommend this unit for new or seasoned operators. Just make sure you don’t skimp on the antenna. I’ll be buying another Firestick and mounting opposite my radio antenna on the hood. I would also recommend not getting a roof mount antenna for this unit. From other reviews, the cb will fail the diagnostics test. Get a good center load and ground it properly and make sure it’s tuned right. Order a Firestix antenna as well Walcott radio has the best prices.”

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “I’ve been a Uniden fan for a long time. I have never had a bad Uniden radio. It was time to upgrade my old badly abused Uniden for my new vehicle and am happy to report that these new Unidens are even better! I was able to match the display colors to my existing displays in my vehicle, lots and lots of color choices. The performance has been great, and the speaker on the unit should be loud enough for most enclosed vehicles. Sound quality is very good compared to most CB radios. Very easy to use controls, and the scanning feature is handy. This radio is very close to a standard DIN size, but just a bit larger in all dimensions. I really wish Uniden had made this a DIN sized case with DIN mounts for easy dash mounting. I was able to mount mine into a modified DIN space. I’ll try to upload a photo. I just opened up the front DIN face a bit in all 4 dimensions, and it hangs out a bit further than ideal, but is fine. The bottom firing speaker is plenty loud even installed in the center counsel. Very nice to have a built in SWR meter and various gain controls. Very happy with this radio and recommend it to friends.”

Customer Review: “Awesome unit! Make sure you get a good antenna and tune it. Below is my review(part of it) from midland handheld about CB wavelength. Figured I would post it here for some tips.– From midland handheld review A few people commented on the poor transmission/reception. CB band does not transfer well into handhelds in general. FCC used to allow 5 watts then lowered it to 4 watts. 4 Watts is not a lot power especially on the 27MHz AM bands. (12 watts for SSB is allowed). Radio performance is pretty simple: Power and the antenna. The technology has not changed in decades and its all the same radio principal so performance from one handheld to another should have little to do with the unit itself but rather the antenna. The 27 MHz band is pretty low and generates a fairly large wavelength. Full antenna required would be on the size on 36 feet long, ½ wave 17 feet and ¼ 8 feet. On autos with the large ground plane there is a compromise and a 36\”-48\” whip works well. For a handheld CB to pack all that in a small antenna does not work well at all. Back in the day the old CB handhelds had 6′ retractable antennas. This is a great unit and works great for CB knowing the inherit limitations of the 27 MHz band. If you are looking for a handheld to talk to another handheld look in the FRS/GMRS band radios which start at 462 MHz. The wavelengths are much shorter and a full antenna is 2 feet, 1/s wave 1 foot and ¼ 5 Inches. So you have pack a true ¼ wave antenna on the unit. Cellphones could never work without being in the UHF and above bands so they can generate the smaller wave with a small antenna. I think this is a lot of value for the money with all the options, etc. Feels solid in your hand and I like it a lot!”

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “Right out of the box one of the best 40 channel radios. I have mine set up at the house as a base station. Powered by a Jesvery 50 amp power supply Astatic Road Devil power mic a KL200P with 80MM FAN and my Delta power meter PMS1000 for how many whiskeys on my 250 scale and my Solarcon A99.. EXCEPT for the KL200P– EVERYTHING is from Amazon I purchased. Menu driven upper lower sideband and the new FM. Nearly half the size of a Cobra 29. I have 0 complaints it’s all good. Talked skip from West Central Florida all over the USA and across The Pond. Looking to up grade for a great little affordable radio I recommend this President George FCC. Share your love with giving me heart if this review my have inspired you. Thx for your time. Get this radio and have fun with it no matter how you use it.”

Customer Review: “Had it in my Pete for over a month now. It does really well. ASC isn’t as good as I hoped. I still use the manual squelch. I noticed that it’s very easy to accidentally switch the band from AM to FM. For basic everyday use it HAS to be on AM.”

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “I’ve owned about 5 of these things and I always leave them in the truck I’m selling. So, I’ve had my current truck awhile but I’m installing these PRO520XL in it this coming weekend. Only complaint is, for it’s compact size, which allows all kinds of places to install it in, I know there’s room inside the unit itself to add Weather Channels (NOAA) I’m sticking with this radio because of the price #1…#2 it’s always performed as advertised with no problems at all. Transmitting distance, with a CB Radio, ANY CB Radio depends on a multitude of things like, mountains, windy roads, elevation (‘skip’ is fun when you’re on the top of an especially big/tall mountain, especially when it’s the flat desert for hundred’s+ of miles on the other side…Talked to MANY MANY folks from all over the SE, East, NE and I especially like ‘conversing’ the Louisiana/Georgia area States. Man, those guys have accents that just won’t quit and especially unique stories to tell…Like a different world over there and I want to visit it before I’m dead and gone. You just gotta love it! Thanks Uniden for keeping me posted while driving, and at home too! And, almost around the world. I started CB’n back in my late teens (16 once I got a license to drive…) and because I’ve used my CB in many occasions on an emergency, for usually less than $100, you can fire a CB up in your vehicle, talk to the truckers on your trip and just have peace of mind. I also use mine when caravanning with a few of my friends who have CB’s while driving together on our way to a camping or fishing destination. Easily coordinate Pee breaks! And, they’re just plain fun, convenient too and you get quality at an affordable cost. PLUS, they’re very very easy to install! Ken J. Nehalem, OR.”

Customer Review: “This is a great little (and inexpensive) radio. I have a much older pro 500 model that still works. That radio has been in an old jeep, mounted on a 4 wheeler, laying on the floor of a truck (temp install), and sitting on a shelf in an outside storage room (humid climate) for years. It’s at least 20 years old… and it’s still working. I made the mistake of letting someone open it up to ‘peak’ it probably 15 years ago. It still works, but I think it did more harm than good. I recently hooked it up again. Receive was GREAT, but transmit wasn’t so great (I’m blaming the ‘peak’ job for that). It did transmit, but it wasn’t very clear. I bet if it had never been hacked, it would be working perfectly. That’s the main reason I decided to buy a similar model. I was originally shopping for a bigger, fancier radio, but decided the price of this was a no-brainer. And it’s really all I need. I spend about an hour a day on the road and mainly listen in for traffic reports and ‘bear’ sightings. I connected it to a Wilson ‘Little Wil’ and had a good SWR reading right away. Just like the old radio, the receive is great (and the speaker is nice and loud). I tested the stock mic, an old RK56, and a new Astatic Road Devil. The stock mic actually sounded the best. The RK56 was much quieter and sounded muffled (although it always worked great on a Cobra 29). The Road Devil was a bit louder, but lacked the clarity of the Uniden mic (but only slightly/not enough to matter). I personally don’t like the small size of the stock mic, so I’m using the Road Devil for now. I hooked up the old radio (pro 500) to an AC adapter inside my garage and connected an old magnetic antenna to it. I let my kids talk to me on that radio as I drove a couple miles away. Even with that much less than ideal setup, the old radio was receiving my new 520xl loud and clear at 2 miles. Hopefully, this one will last as long as the old one.”

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “Cobra — a well-tested, tried and true name to the CB world. Shipping was quick and received well-packaged. Easy installation with an available switched or continuous powered source (just remember to turn it off.) The USB option is great, but opted for the direct connection for my use. Screen is easily visible and control function buttons are large and easy to operate. Great radio.”

Customer Review: “Short review: This CB preforms just as good as my 29LTD does on the bench. The reviews saying it’s quiet, make sure the RX audio “DSP” level is set to off vs the factory default of 1. Also make sure it’s set to “DX” and not local, it’s deaf on“local”. I found that setting it to DX, squelch off, and RX DSP to level 1 works well and it only makes noise when it hears something. I wish the included USB power adapter had the same funky twist lock port like on the “black box”. Also, if you do end up using this in something like a side-by-side, make sure that USB port is sealed. If that plug cover comes off, nothing is stopping water from entering it. Now on to a more technical review. After receiving and unpacking this radio, it was put to some tests on the bench with an IFR service monitor. First tests were receiver sensitivity. Receiver DSP doesn’t do much for RF performance other than help clean up noise. You’ll rarely need to go above level 2 because it starts sounding horrible set any higher. AM results DX setting: .1uV or less on AM with 50% modulation. (Pretty much as low as the service monitor will go.) Local setting: 1uV or more on AM with 50% modulation. (Very local receiving ranges) FM results DX: .1uV (as good or better than some of the commercial radios I’ve had to service) Local: 5uV (very, very, local) TX results AM Average power: 3.69 watts (FCC complaint) Peak (TX DSP on, 1): 12.19 watts Peak (TX DSP off): 15.4 watts Modulation (TX DSP on, 1): 80% Modulation (TX DSP off): 90% FM Power: 3.5 watts Deviation: +.7Hz (this was impressive) I haven’t done any testing after being installed in a vehicle, but from bench testing, I don’t doubt it’ll work just fine as a CB when paired with a decent antenna. If you were wondering about making any tweaks, not reasonably possible at this time. However, the USB port appears to be an actual USB port so eventually someone will figure out how to make changes via firmware.”

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “I purchased this for a few reasons. I’m into radio, HAM, GMRS, SW, SDR and more. On a radio forum I am on, lot of people were talking about CB making a comeback. In fact it’s been a longtime ongoing conversation and how it is making a comeback. I was on CB from about 1972 to the mid 1980’s. I purchased this and a Uniden Pro401. I also purchased a Francis Hot Rod CB26 antenna, a better mount and set everything up properly on my truck. I used this and the Uniden on a 4000 mile round trip from Tennessee to Arizona. At home I have kept it plugged in and on and with one radio scanning and one radio on these were the results during the 4000+ mile round trip. I heard exactly one trucker and two women talk on the CB. The trucker long enough to get directions from a truck stop and two women who only made contact so one could let the other know to call her on her cell. And of course the illegal high power broadcasters out of Nevada that override everything on some channels (23). People on GMRS were broadcasting constantly to the point I had to turn off my GMRS radio. Unfortunately it appears Citizen Band is not making a comeback, from my experience, this radio is called a Road Trip and that is what I used it for, a 4000 mile road trip. If my experience is any indication whatsoever, no, CB is not making a comeback. The Airwaves are dead. As far as the radio itself, it is a good radio, solidly built, with batteries in has a nice weight to it, plenty of options and the weather channels work well although I can do the same real time weather on my Digital trunking Scanner or Cell phone. The radio itself gets five stars, the CB airwaves get zero because almost nobody is on it. Edit: We just had a major winter storm and received more snow and ice than we have in over three decades. The one day snowfall hasn’t seen this accumulation since 1993. We are in the hills and mountains with a lot of trucks coming this direction to get to Knoxville, Chattanooga and further on up to Nashville. Listening to my scanners everything is extremely active with one emergency call after another around the clock. Thought I might turn on this CB to see if Channel 9 is active. Channel 9 (The emergency channel) is extremely active. We have had multiple jackknifed trucks, one rollover and one went off the mountain into the trees. Truckers are using Channel 9 like I have never heard it. We are in the mountains, everything is snow and ice and this is what they call, for us, a once every 25 year storm. so no one expected the conditions to be this bad and off the main highways nothing gets cleared, it has to melt, because we don’t budget for storms that only happen once every 20-30 years. so yes the CB is being used heavily to get help on Channel 9. For normal day to day use, the airwaves are dead. But now, under extreme weather conditions, the truckers are definitely using it and so are some of the people stuck in their homes up on the mountain and plateau.”

Customer Review: “As advertised. In summary -Because I have thoroughly tested this radio, I now know that it provides my family & me an EASY TO USE(including a well written, organized & illustrated Manual), portable, proven/stable technology, easy to keep energized means of local (i.e., ‘line of sight’ to the horizon) e-m-e-r-g-e-n-c-y communication. Based on the above (and with lots of hands on experience with other popular means of family communication, such as GMRS & FRS) this is, for us, an optimal investment. Update – Jan. 28, 2025: Wanted to offer the following FAVORABLE ‘field testing’ FINDINGS to those, i.e., NOT ‘everybody’ : ), who would want THIS GRANULAR LEVEL OF DETAIL. This is based on running the Cobra HHRT50 (aka HH50WXST) CB thru the following test cycles: 6 Charge mode and then 6 thru Listen, aka Receive, mode, using NiMH batteries +1 test cycle thru Listen, aka Receive, Mode using Alkaline batteries. None of the following field testing has to do with Transmit mode, or Scan mode. CHARGE mode: Used a well known / proven brand of NiMH 2500 milli-Ampere hours (aka, “mAh”) AA batteries. Number of hours to Charge averaged 11. This 11 hours statistic does NOT include the 1st full Charge which took the characteristically longer NiMH 1st Charge cycle, which in this 1st Charge case took 28 hours. LISTEN, aka, RECEIVE mode: (a.) NiMH: Used the above NiMH 2500 milli-Ampere hours (aka, “mAh”) fully charged AA batteries. Number of hours of usage averaged 28 for the batteries to deplete. (b.) Alkaline: Used a fully charged well known / proven brand of NON-rechargeable 2500 milli-Ampere hours (aka, “mAh”) AAs. Number of hours of usage was 22 for the batteries to deplete. I only cycled thru THIS specific test using Alkaline one time, thus, this number, 22, is not an average. Associated technical FAVORABLE experience to be reported: I found the Cobra User Manual *, cover to cover, to be well organized, illustrated & written. Meanwhile, the User Manual does not include the Ampere consumption rates in the various modes. I recognize that only a small percentage of CB users would actually ever want this level of detailed information. In my case, I did, hence, I posted related questions on this to ‘Amazon Q & A.’ & learned as follows. Want interested readers to know that with in less than 2 days I received the needed & helpful information directly from the Cobra Manufacturing Support Department(along with their professionally required responsible statement: ‘These values are estimates and may vary based on specific conditions and settings’). For all of the above, I am MOST appreciative; here were their replies that some Review readers might want to know: Charging mode Amperes consumption rate: 500 – 1000 milli-Amperes, depending on usual variables. Listen, aka Receive, mode Amperes consumption rate: 100 – 150 milli-Amperes, depending on usual variables. Transmit mode Amperes consumption rate: On ‘high power’ 700 – 900 milli-Amperes, depending on usual variables. ______* Cobra Part No. 480-1088-P-001, Version D (Publish Date: 2017).”

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “Was blown away when I connected everything and it blasted out voices! It picked up so many channels, it never stopped receiving. I live in Washington state, not near any big cities, and heard a woman from San Diego! Easy to set up, super easy to operate! Best thing I’ve bought in a while. Living in rural Washington, sometimes there’s little or no cell service. Great back up for emergency communications! Besides, there is something about talking & hearing people both near and far! Gonna make road trips a lot more fun!”

Customer Review: “Smaller than expected, which was awesome. The radio worked well with the antenna provided. If you want better quality, and longer range you need to pay for it. This is excellent for the price. You won’t be able to talk to the moon, but perfect for traveling.”

Essential Factors We Consider

When selecting the best CB radio on Amazon, we focus on several key factors. First, channel availability and modes (AM/FM/SSB) determine how versatile the radio is. Display readability and backlighting are critical for ease of use in different lighting conditions. Noise cancellation and filtering capabilities ensure clear communication even in noisy environments. Durability and build quality matter for long-term reliability, especially for outdoor or professional use. Lastly, ease of installation and accessory compatibility, like antennas and microphones, influence the overall user experience.

Budget Planning

Determine your needs first—if you require advanced features like SSB and weather alerts, be prepared to invest a bit more. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between AM, FM, and SSB modes on CB radios?

A: AM (Amplitude Modulation) is the standard mode for most CB communication. FM (Frequency Modulation) offers clearer sound quality with less static but is less common on CB. SSB (Single Side Band) provides extended range and clearer signals but requires more advanced equipment and tuning.

Q: Do I need a license to operate a CB radio?

A: In the United States, CB radios operate on a license-free basis for personal use under FCC rules, so no license is required. However, users must adhere to regulations regarding power limits and channel usage.

Q: How important is the antenna for CB radio performance?

A: The antenna is crucial for CB radio range and clarity. A good quality, properly tuned antenna significantly improves transmission and reception, often more than upgrading the radio itself.

Q: Can I use a CB radio handheld device instead of a base station?

A: Yes, handheld CB radios provide portability and convenience but generally have shorter range and less power than base station radios. They are suitable for short-range communication and emergency use.

Q: What features should I look for in a CB radio for truck driving?

A: Look for radios with multiple channels including emergency channels 9 and 19, noise cancellation, clear display (preferably backlit or NightWatch), durable build, and easy-to-use controls. Features like SWR calibration help optimize antenna performance.

Finding the best CB radio on Amazon is easier when you know what features and qualities to prioritize.
